What is a Top-Up MBA? A guide for Level 7 Diploma holders
Westlyn Careers · · 5 min read
Many professionals complete a Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management, Leadership or a similar subject and then ask the same question: can this count towards a full MBA? In many cases the answer is yes, through a Top-Up MBA.
What “top-up” means
In the UK system, a Master’s degree such as an MBA is typically made up of 180 credits. A Level 7 Diploma usually carries 120 credits at the same level, broadly equivalent to the taught part of a Master’s program. A Top-Up MBA recognises that prior learning and asks you to complete the remaining stage, usually independent research such as a dissertation, to earn the full MBA from the awarding university.
The result is a shorter route to an MBA, because you are not repeating subjects you have already studied and been assessed on.
Who a Top-Up MBA suits
- Professionals who already hold an eligible Level 7 Diploma (120 credits).
- People who want to complete a full MBA without restarting from the beginning.
- Those who are comfortable with independent study and applied research related to their work.
