How to check an online degree before you enrol: a 7-point checklist
Westlyn Careers · · 6 min read
Online programs make it possible to earn a qualification without leaving your job, but they also make it easier for unclear or misleading offers to reach you. A few careful checks before you pay can save you time, money and disappointment. Here is the checklist we encourage every applicant to use, including for the programs we support.
1. Who actually awards the qualification?
Many organisations can be involved in one program: an awarding institution, a delivery partner, and an admissions or recruitment agent. Only the awarding institution issues the qualification. Make sure you know its full name and country, and that it appears on your offer letter and, eventually, your certificate. On every Westlyn Careers program page we name the awarding institution and explain our own role separately.
2. Is the awarding institution recognised?
Look the institution up through official sources in its own country rather than relying on marketing material. For UK universities, the UK government publishes a list of recognised bodies with degree-awarding powers. For UK regulated qualifications such as Level 7 Diplomas, check the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. For institutions elsewhere, check the relevant national ministry or quality agency.
3. What exactly is the award?
A “Master’s degree”, a “professional MBA”, a “Level 7 Diploma” and a “certificate” are different things, even when the subject is the same. Ask for the exact title of the award and its level. Some professional development programs carry the name MBA but are not conventional university Master’s degrees; that may be fine for your goals, but you should know it before you enrol.
4. Will it be accepted for your purpose?
Recognition depends on who needs to accept the qualification. An employer, a professional body, another university and a government authority may each have different rules. If you will need the qualification for a promotion, a licence, further study or equivalency, ask that organisation directly before you start.
In the UAE, if you expect to need a qualification attested or assessed for equivalency, check the current requirements of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research first. Rules for online and distance-learning qualifications can differ from those for on-campus study.
5. How is the program delivered and assessed?
- Is it fully online, blended, or does it require attendance?
- Are classes live, recorded or self-paced?
- How are you assessed: assignments, exams, a dissertation?
- How long does it realistically take, and how many hours a week?
6. Fees, payments and refunds in writing
Ask for the full fee, what it includes, the payment schedule and the refund or withdrawal policy, in writing, before you sign anything or pay a deposit. Check whether any fees are paid to the institution directly or through an agent.
7. Watch for red flags
- Guaranteed admission, guaranteed jobs, promotions or visas.
- Pressure to pay immediately, such as countdown offers or “last seat” claims.
- No clear name for the awarding institution, or a name that changes between documents.
- A degree promised in a few weeks, or without any assessment.
- Reluctance to put fees, duration or the award title in writing.
