What is a Level 7 Diploma? Levels and credits explained
Westlyn Careers · · 5 min read
If you have looked into management qualifications, you have probably seen phrases like “Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership” or “120 credits at Level 7”. These terms come from the UK qualifications system. Understanding them helps you compare programs and avoid paying for something that does not lead where you expect.
What the levels mean
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, qualifications are organised into levels that show how demanding they are. A simplified view:
| Level | Examples of qualifications at this level |
|---|---|
| Level 3 | A levels, Level 3 diplomas |
| Level 4–5 | Higher national certificates and diplomas, foundation degrees |
| Level 6 | Bachelor’s degrees with honours, graduate diplomas |
| Level 7 | Master’s degrees (such as an MBA), postgraduate certificates and diplomas, Level 7 Diplomas |
| Level 8 | Doctorates |
So a Level 7 Diploma is at the same level as a Master’s degree. That means the difficulty of the study is comparable. It does not mean the two qualifications are the same.
What credits mean
Credits measure the size of a qualification. In the UK system, one credit represents around ten hours of learning, including teaching, independent study and assessment. A Master’s degree is typically 180 credits. A Level 7 Diploma is commonly 120 credits, which is broadly the size of the taught part of a Master’s program.
Level 7 Diploma vs Master’s degree
- Same level, different size. A 120-credit diploma is smaller than a 180-credit Master’s degree.
- Different awarding bodies. Level 7 Diplomas are usually awarded by professional awarding organisations regulated by Ofqual; Master’s degrees are awarded by universities with degree-awarding powers.
- Different titles. A diploma holder should not describe themselves as holding a Master’s degree.
How a Level 7 Diploma can lead to an MBA
Because a 120-credit Level 7 Diploma covers much of the taught content of a Master’s, some universities accept it as prior learning. You then complete the remaining stage, usually a dissertation, to earn the full degree. This is called a top-up. The Top-Up MBA available through Westlyn Careers works this way: holders of an Ofqual-regulated Level 7 Diploma (120 credits) or an LEB Level 7 Diploma complete the Master’s stage of a University of Gloucestershire MBA in six months, fully online. How to check a Level 7 Diploma
- Look it up on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications to confirm the awarding organisation, level, credit value and qualification number.
- Check that the name on your certificate matches the register exactly.
- If you plan to top up, confirm with the university or delivery partner that your specific diploma is eligible before you apply.
- If you need the qualification for an employer or government process, ask them how they treat Level 7 Diplomas.
